Hand-Me-Downs // Dress up // Dress down

Today we will review three new Expressions. Hand-me-downs, Dress up, and Dress down. Review the definitions below and then look at the 3 example sentences for each expression. After reviewing the information, try to make your own examples for each expression.

 

EXPRESSIONMEANING
Hand-me-downsA garment or other item that has been passed on from another person.
Dress upTo dress in a fancy dress/outfit
Dress downTo dress in a casual or informal manner.

HAND-ME-DOWNS

#EXAMPLES
1I always had hand-me-down clothes growing up because I had two older sisters.
2This jacket was a hand-me-down.
3As a child I was always dressed in my sister's hand-me-downs and I longed for something new to wear.

DRESS UP

#EXAMPLES
1They dress themselves up in their finest clothing.
2Please dress up for the dance.
3He decided to dress up for his first date.

DRESS DOWN

#EXAMPLES
1I dress down if I know I'm just going to be moving boxes of documents at work.
2I dressed down for the casual party.
3At my job we normally dress down on Fridays.
