BREAKDOWN
- STAGE 1: TOPICAL STUDY: Vocabulary & Expressions
- Breakdown:
- Study a different topic every day for 3 days by learning 3 vocabulary words or expressions used by native English speakers to speak about the topic
- Reasons
- Builds topic-specific fluency: Focused vocabulary study creates mental clusters of related words, enabling faster, more natural topic discussions without translation delays.
- Mirrors native speaker thought patterns: Learning how natives organize vocabulary by topic trains your brain to structure English thoughts the same way.
- Creates automatic word associations: Studying related expressions together builds instant connections between concepts and English words, bypassing your native language entirely.
- Examples
- Topic 1: FITNESS
- warm up – to do light exercises before a workout to prepare your body and prevent injury
- Example: Always warm up for at least five minutes before you start running to avoid pulling a muscle.
- rep (repetition) – one complete movement of an exercise
- Example: Try to do three sets of 15 reps for each exercise to build strength effectively.
- cool down – to do gentle exercises after a workout to gradually lower your heart rate
- Example: Don’t forget to cool down with some stretching after your workout to reduce muscle soreness.
Real-life scenario: A personal trainer is instructing a new client at the gym
A: “Can I start lifting weights right away?” B: “Not yet. We need to warm up first to get your muscles ready.” A: “Okay. How many reps should I do?” B: “Let’s start with 10 reps per set, then we’ll cool down with some light cardio.”

- return – to bring back an item you purchased to get your money back or exchange it
- Example: I need to return these shoes because they’re too small, and get a larger size.
Real-life scenario: Two friends are shopping at a clothing store
A: “Are you looking for something specific?” B: “No, I’m just browsing. I might find something I like.” A: “I need to return this shirt. Want to come with me to the checkout?” B: “Sure, I’ll wait with you in line.”

- Example: Passengers with small children may board the plane first.
- jet lag – extreme tiredness and other physical effects caused by traveling across different time zones
- Example: I had terrible jet lag after flying from New York to Tokyo, and it took me three days to recover.
Real-life scenario: Two travelers are at the airport discussing their flight
A: “What time do we board?” B: “In about 30 minutes. But we have a two-hour layover in Chicago.” A: “That’s annoying. I just hope I don’t get jet lag this time.” B: “Try to sleep on the plane. That usually helps.”

- STAGE 2: TOPICAL STUDY: 5Ws
- Breakdown:
- Answer the 5Ws (Who, What, When, Where, Why) about the topic by creating one sentence for each question, then combine all 5 sentences into a natural paragraph
- Reasons
- Develops contextual thinking: Answering the 5Ws forces you to think about topics in complete contexts, training your brain to organize information naturally in English rather than translating isolated thoughts.
- Builds coherent expression: Creating connected paragraphs from individual sentences teaches you to link ideas smoothly, which is how native speakers actually communicate in real conversations.
- Strengthens practical fluency: Combining the 5Ws into natural narratives prepares you to describe real situations spontaneously without mentally translating each component separately.
