Today we will review three new Expressions. Black Sheep, Like one of the family, and Run in the family. Review the definitions below and then look at the 3 example sentences for each expression. After reviewing the information, try to make your own examples for each expression.

 

EXPRESSIONMEANING
Black Sheep(A member of a family or group who is regarded as a disgrace to them.)
Like one of the family(To feel as if someone were a member of your own family)
Run in the family(To be a common quality among members of a particular family)

BLACK SHEEP

#EXAMPLES
1Rachel is the black sheep in the family because she is an artist whereas everyone else is a lawyer.
2He’s the black sheep of the family.
3John was the black sheep of the family, so he always felt lonely.

LIKE ONE OF THE FAMILY

#EXAMPLES
1We treat our dog like one of the family.
2We are very happy to have you stay with us. I hope you don’t mind if we treat you like one of the family.
3She’s like one of the family.

RUN IN THE FAMILY

#EXAMPLES
1Playing the piano runs in my family.
2My brothers and I have red hair. It runs in the family.
3His father and uncle were basketball stars in college, so athletic ability runs in the family.
