018 : English Vocabulary (Deplete // Devastated)

Hey everyone, I’m Teacher Tiffani and I want to thank you so much for joining me for another episode of the Speak English with Tiffani podcast. In today’s lesson we are going to listen to one English dialogue and learn 2 new English Vocabulary Words.

DIALOGUE

Ok, let’s begin with the dialogue:

The man was starting to get worried, because of his wife’s spending habits. Her numerous shopping sprees were starting to deplete their family bank account. So, he told her that she had to stop spending so much money every month. When she heard her husband’s request, she was completely devastated because shopping was her only pleasure.

Ok great, now let’s go over the two new vocabulary words that were in the dialogue.

FIRST VOCABULARY WORD

The first vocabulary word was…

“Deplete” (repeat)

Now, repeat after me…
“Deplete” (repeat twice)

Ok, now let’s say it at a normal pace…
“Deplete” (repeat twice)

This vocabulary word means to use the supply or resource of or to diminish in number or quantity.


EXAMPLES

So, let’s look at five examples using this vocabulary word.

The first example is…

“The lake was depleted of water.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“The lake was depleted of water.”

[Now, this time we will go at a more natural pace and I want you to try to follow me]
“The lake was depleted of water.”

The second example is…

“They started to deplete the country of its natural resources.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“They started to deplete the country of its natural resources.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“They started to deplete the country of its natural resources.”

The third example is…

“We depleted our life savings.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“We depleted our life savings.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“We depleted our life savings.”

The fourth example is…

“Our stock of food has been completely depleted.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“Our stock of food has been completely depleted.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“Our stock of food has been completely depleted.”

The fifth example is…

“The soil is depleted of all its minerals.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“The soil is depleted of all its minerals.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“The soil is depleted of all its minerals.”

 


SECOND VOCABULARY WORD

Ok good deal, now let’s go over the second vocabulary word that was in the dialogue.

The second vocabulary word was…

“Devastated” (repeat)

Now, repeat after me…
“Devastated” (repeat twice)

Ok, now let’s say it at a normal pace…
“Devastated” (repeat twice)

This vocabulary word means to be very shocked and upset.


EXAMPLES

So, let’s look at five examples using this vocabulary word.

The first example is…

“I was devastated when the doctor told me the news.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“I was devastated when the doctor told me the news.”

[Now, this time we will go at a more natural pace and I want you to try to follow me]
“I was devastated when the doctor told me the news.”

The second example is…

“She was devastated when her elder brother died.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“She was devastated when her elder brother died.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“She was devastated when her elder brother died.”

The third example is…

“He was utterly devastated when he heard the news.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“He was utterly devastated when he heard the news.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“He was utterly devastated when he heard the news.”

The fourth example is…

“I was devastated when I failed the exam.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“I was devastated when I failed the exam.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“I was devastated when I failed the exam.”

The fifth example is…

“They were devastated by the news.”

[Once again, this time repeat after me]
“They were devastated by the news.”

[Now, the last time at a regular pace]
“They were devastated by the news.”

 


DIALOGUE

Ok, now let’s listen to the original dialogue again and see if you can recognize the 2 English vocabulary words.

The man was starting to get worried, because of his wife’s spending habits. Her numerous shopping sprees were starting to deplete their family bank account. So, he told her that she had to stop spending so much money every month. When she heard her husband’s request, she was completely devastated because shopping was her only pleasure.
