Explanation: The first part of this rule focuses on the important details of the topic, subject, or person you are discussing. In other words, you want to help your listener visualize what you are talking about.

Topic & Question: Beach [What do you and your friends normally do at the beach?]

My Response: We normally play in the water

3 Details:

  1. Big waves [Facts.Details]
  2. Frigid water [Facts.Details]
  3. Extremely salty [Facts.Details]

Support for my Response:

“My friends and I normally play in the water when we go to the beach. We love to plunge into the big waves. Even though the frigid water usually shocks us, we love being together in the water. The water is usually extremely salty as well, but we still love it.”

Words & Expressions:

  1. Plunge into: To push (something) into (something) quickly and forcefully; to suddenly start doing something actively or enthusiastically
    1. “He plunged the knife into the cake.”
    2. “I plunged the sponge into the bucket of water.”
    3. “He took a deep breath and plunged into his speech.”
  2. Frigid: Very cold in temperature
    1. “Few plants can grow in such a frigid environment.”
    2. “A snowstorm hit the West today, bringing with it frigid temperatures.”

3 Examples

Explanation: The second part of this rule focuses on examples of the topic, subject, or person you are discussing. In other words, you want to help your listener understand more by giving them real-life example situations.

  1. Surfing in the evening. [Situation]
  2. Surfing in the morning before work. [Situation]
  3. Surfing every day in the summer. [Situation]

“My friends and I really enjoy playing in the water when we go to the beach. For example, when we have time after work, we normally go surfing in the evening. We also enjoy getting up at the crack of dawn to go surfing before work. Finally, once the summer time comes, we usually end up going surfing every single day.”

Words & Expressions:

  1. Crack of dawn: A time very early in the morning; daybreak
    1. “I’ve been up since the crack of dawn.”
    2. “My parents always made us get up at the crack of dawn.”
    3. “We have to leave at the crack of dawn.”

3 Reasons

Explanation: The third part of this rule focuses on giving specific reasons for your ideas on the topic, subject, or person you are discussing. In other words, you want to help your listener understand your thought process and how you developed your idea.

Topic & Question: Beach [What do you and your friends normally do at the beach?]

My Response: We normally play in the water

3 Reasons:

  1. The water is absolutely beautiful. [Support]
  2. It’s a combination of exercise and relaxation. [Support]
  3. We all swim very well. [Support]

Support for my Response:

“My friends and I really enjoy playing in the water when we go to the beach. One of the main reasons we enjoy playing in the water so much is because the water is absolutely beautiful. Another reason is that playing in the water is a combination of exercise and relaxation. So, it’s really a win-win situation for us. Finally, since we all swim very well, we are able to stay in the water for a long time.”

  1. Absolutely: Completely or totally; with no qualification, restriction, or limitation; totally

  2. Combination: A joining or merging of different parts or qualities in which the component elements are individually distinct
    1. “This color combination is absolutely beautiful.”
    2. “A combination of tiredness and boredom caused me to fall asleep.”
    3. “This drug can be safely used in combination with other medicines.”
  3. Win-Win: Of or denoting a situation in which each party benefits in some way
    1. “Flexible hours are a win-win situation for employers and employees.”
    2. “For employers, allowing staff to work from home has proved to be a win-win situation.”
    3. “It looks like a win-win deal to me.”
